Will I get caught with pets in my apartment?

The apartment I am looking into allows pets, but they charge outrageous deposits and extra rent per month. I have two cats. I am wondering if when I sign the lease I say I don't have pets to avoid paying the deposit and extra rent. It's an apartment complex run by a corporation so the only people coming into my apartment will be maintenance and how are they supposed to know I said I don't have pets on my lease? Will this work? Anyone get away with it before?|||Yes, I have. We had an apartment where you were only allowed 1 pet. Now, mind you, we paid for 1 pet. But in addition to our 1 dog (which is tough to hide), we also had 2 cats. Its pretty rare Maintenance people come into an apartment, unless you live in a dump, so that should not be a big issue. Plus- they have to give you notice to come in. So, just put the cats in a bedroom and close the door before they arrive. Just be sure to keep them out of the windows.|||Yes, they'll know. The maintenance guys at my place need to know if there are animals so they either don't get out or don't bite them. Pet deposits are expensive, but typically the monthly payments are cheap. Mines $10 per animal a month. My apartment is run by a corporation too, but they still have an onsite office where they do yearly inspections.|||You do not need to do that. This will be a direct violation of your lease agreement and possible cause for eviction, which will cost you way more than the pet fees or rent. I do random inspections on my units just for that reason and if a pet is found you can be charged the fee and the entire pet rent since you moved in all at the same time. If it is not paid your rental payment will not be accepted and that will also leave you subject to an eviction.|||You might get away with it for a while, but you will almost certainly be caught eventually. You'll then be nailed for the additional rent and deposits. You also will be risking eviction.

If they discover it when you move out -- the smell will be a dead giveaway -- they'll hold your deposit and probably sue for the extra rent that you should have been paying.

FYI, the maintenance folks' workorders probaby list the number of occupants and the pet status of the unit. They often get paid bonuses for ratting your dishonest tenants such as yourself.|||Usually the maintenance men know before hand usually because it's noted in case they have an aggressive dog.

It's all about how petty the guys are and how much these maintenance men care.

My experience (having done what you did many times, but with dogs) has been they don't give a shi*. They're probably under paid as it is, now they have to act like animal cops? I doubt it.

Cats are easy to hide and aren't like dogs, if you had a dog you might want to be more concerned, you should be fine.

Worst they can do is threaten to charge you the fee if they do find out. If you still refuse to pay they could evict the animals and/or you but that's not likely.|||You MIGHT get away with it but the chances are probably higher that you will get caught.

You do realize that doing that makes you a liar and a thief, how does it make you feel when people lie to you? Do you expect other people to "do the right thing"? If so why? Why do you expect other people to be honest to you if you have been dishonest? Are you going to be mad if they evict you and sue you for damages as well as the rent you stole from them?|||We catch folks all the time. First-cats will sit in the window and be seen. Second-people who are doing the right thing will turn you in (thinking it gets them in the good graces of the landlord). Third-maintenance will report pets, most places keep a list of the units with pets so they aren't accidently turned lose when doing work. And in many case the complex can terminate your lease for this type of violation. They may just tell you to pay the deposit and back bill the pet rent but they can also issue you a lease violation notice and start the process to evict you. Just tell them you have the pets and pay the fees. The joys of pet ownership...|||I have done that before and i got away with it. However, a friend of mine tried to do the same thing and got caught. Her cat liked to sit in the window and the office secretary was showing a nearby apt and noticed the cat and the fact that she just moved and declined the pet fee...obviously found it odd so she reported it. I guess just take your chances....good luck!|||They will most likely find out one way or the other. Is it really worth getting evicted over? You should be grateful you even found a place that accepts pets...very rare these days because of tenants like you who hide the fact that they have pets.|||It might work for a while, BUT they've been around the block a few times with shady people like you SO they've probably divided complexes in a way that they know where the pets are.

Karma is real - when they find out, be prepared for an eviction and be prepared to owe them a TON of money in fees and damages.
