What's the best non-toxic weed killer that's safe for pets and kids?

I've seen lots of home remedies (vinegar + salt) and advertisements for biodegradable, safe weed killers. Wondering if anyone has experience using anything specific to kill weeds, that is also non-toxic and safe for humans and pets. How effective is your remedy? What kinds of weeds/plants does it kill, and what doesn't it kill? Do weeds grow back easily?|||Your hands - pull them.





Round Up has been tied to fish %26amp; amphibian egg death / deformaties.|||Boil water and pour, it will kill anything|||I use vinegar on my wall stone walkways and not only does it kill the weeds but it encourages moss to grow around the stones, and I like how that looks|||if your weeds are in the bed and not in the grass, spray Round-up mixed with Sithe and if your weeds are in the lawn such as clover, wild strawberries spray Post-m. (go you your local pesticide store). both chemicals will be safe around both kids and pets 30 minutes after spraying.|||As long as you follow the directions on the manufacturers label you are being as safe as can be. Manufacturers do hundreds of tests on their products to make sure they are not harmful to pets and people. They don't have recommendations for nothing, they are there to make sure you don't hurt the plants you want (if you are using a selective herbicide) while killing the bad ones, and at the same time.





A herbicide will do its job so long as it is applied per the directions on the label. All I have to say is READ THE LABEL!|||Just plain vinegar works very well, but will kill all the grass around the weed also.|||Glyphosate or Roundup is totally safe for all non-plant life forms. It is as non-toxic as sugar and it only harms plants that have a paricular enzyme called aromatase which is not found in any animal life forms. Furthermore, it is quickly biodegradable and is totally gone in 6-24 hours.|||Pick 'em.|||The only non-toxic solution I have found is a hoe and a bent back and lots of sweat.|||Vinegar IS one of the best and it will kill any plant. Start with a solution of 1 / 10 = 1 part vin to 10 parts water. If that doesn't do the trick, then up the vinegar until the plant dies. Boiling water will also kill unwanted plants. Don't use salt, it'll muck up your soil and then you'll be UNdoing the damage for a loooong time.





The problem with both vinegar and boiling water is that the unwanted plant may/probably won't be the ONLY plant you kill. For spot weed killing try using fire. Your local garden shop will have an assortment of devices that can be used to flame weeds. But I just use the candle starter, It's a small, low flame and I can control it 100%.





I hate to say it because I know you don't want to hear it, but the absolutley best solution is to hand pull the weeds. Any substance that you put on your plants, even those labeled as organic, will leach into the ground and ultimately affect your other plants. Keep that in mind.
