Why do people think good food for our pets is soooo expensive?

ive seen so many questions and answers saying they dont feed their pets good food because they arent stupid enough to spend that much money

isnt it only a few bucks more?

and if you cant afford that why do you even have a dog?|||I have a dog and I spend 30 dollars for a 16 lb. bag. It is expensive but it is worth it. The cheap dog foods actually cause my dog to vomit because of the horrible fillers they use in them. I too think that if a person is not willing to take good care of their pets, they really shouldn't have them. This goes for those who like to tie their dogs up outside as well. They are pack animals and need to be with other living beings. It is terrible to think of the isolation many of these "pets" face because people just want to have one.|||It all adds up in the end when those people have to pay the vet for health issues that could have been avoided.|||Not only is it only a little more expensive, you feed your dogs less food and save more money.

people will tell you "my dogs have been on it for a million years and are healthy and happy"

There is no excuse. By-products are NASTY. Whenever you ask people things like that they just say they deserve a dog too and they can't afford it, and their dogs are fine, and it's nothing wrong with feeding my dog other euthnized dogs, and other poor excuses. It's useless to even ask them, they will never really answer the question.|||i think if u have a pet u should love it, thats why u should make an effort to take care of it by giving it good food...|||Do we HAVE to buy the expensive stuff to have a dog? I don't think so. Plenty of people buy store-shelf dogfood (I do, because I'm in a remote town, and I buy what my store offers, Purina Puppy Chow, and some other even "lower" grade dog foods that I refuse to buy, like Ol'Roy) and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I personally can't afford the "good" stuff and it's not abuse to not be able to buy 35-50 dollar dog food. My dogs are all healthy, well maintained, active and well care for animals. For the people that can do it... good for them, but us poor folk on truck driver wages like to have animals too, and we deserve dogs if we can offer them a loving home too right, there's nothing wrong with not being able to afford high dollar dog food like "everyone else"?. Thank you. We hear of people that DON'T feed their dogs and beat the living heck out of them everyday... and I'm not a responsible owner because my dogs bellies are being FILLED with Purina Puppy Chow??|||Because they don't realize how much cheaper it is in the long run to get the more expensive food instead of the cheaper food. If they just thought about it, they'd realize that our pets DESERVE good food (if we do, why wouldn't they?) and it comes out cheaper. Heck, my 80 lb very active male GSD only eats 3 1/2 cups of Canidae. He would need 8-9 cups of grocery store brands to maintain weight! That says enough to me about how good it is for him and how much cheaper it is for me. Not having to clean up enormous amounts of poo certainly doesn't hurt my feelings either. Not having to see the vet all the time because of crappy nutrition definitely makes my dogs happy.|||Because we are too busy to buy the ingredients, and lack the time to buy it and cook it ourselves

Think about it,........ .Brown rice, ground beef, some brocclis, carrots and peas cooked to a mush, good for a couple of days servings. Freeze your leftovers.

Sounds pretty healthy and economical to me

I do it every once in a while. I dont have the energy time to do it all the time|||The best food is our food. You just need to know percentages of proteins, carbs, fat. Dogs, for example should only have 25% protein whereas cat should have 50% daily. Commercial pet food is disgusting. The Chinese were recently putting a toxic plastic compound in it. All companies put disgusting other things. It's not strictly regulated. Research it and you'll see. There are millions of site to read.|||I agree. But even sadder it doesn't have to be expensive if the effort was put in to feed a dog an appropriate diet. Carnivores need meat, not all of the other crap that fills most foods, especially the cheaper ones.

I feed my guys raw, and I feed Innova EVO when travelling. Raw is not even close to expensive with a little planning, and the benefits for health are amazing.|||like most religions, feeding pets expensive foods isn't necessarily based on research and science, but often advertising and beliefs...... ................. pets' digestive systems are different from humans, and most seem to do just fine on less-expensive brands.............. mid-range brands also seem to do well, and if you believe the labels and talk to veterinarians about what vitamins and minerals the pets REALLY need, they'll probably tell you to avoid the real cheap ones because they're made with non-nutritious fillers, but don't waste your money on "Fancy Feasts" for cats, for example.... priced WAY above other brands....... we've been feeding our going-on-17-years cat Friskies canned salmon dinner because he likes it. our vet said he had a kidney problem and a thyroid problem, so we tried some fancy, expensive kidney-friendly food, and he wouldn't eat it.......... so, back to the Salmon Dinner with a thyroid pill dissolved in water and mixed into every can, and he's put weight back on and is happy as a furry little clam. we expect him to outlive our 12-year-old Golden Retriever who also does not get any fancy, expensive food. her only problem, as is mine... is not enough exercise.... ............ hey, if you google it, i'm sure you'll find someone or some groups that'll defend either side of this discussion to the death...... but that makes life fun, too..... if you're interested in trying to make up your own mind and not just doing what someone trained you to do...... kind of gets back to my opening statement again, too..... :)|||The dog food from China that killed and made many dogs sick was a expensive food. My sis used Eukinuba(sic, maybe) and the vet told her it was making her Shepards have diarrhea for monthes on end at that time. She now makes her food, as many others. Which is not much diff. than tablescraps. Turkey and rice w/ veggies|||I think because they just assume it's expensive without actually checking the price. I think most of them would be surprised at how affordable good food like Canidae and Innova really are! Plus, because you have to feed less, you have to buy less, so in the end, you are paying the same amount of money for food that is 10 times better. In my eyes, to do anything less is a huge WASTE of money. Why would I buy food made from bits of corn and chicken feet when I could be buying real meat and veggies for the same amount of money? That's not smart spending, in my opinion. And lets not forget that good food is the first step in good health, and therefore fewer vet bills.

Bottom line: anyone who thinks good food is "soooo expensive" simply hasn't taken the time to actually price these foods, and/or doesn't understand the concept of "better food - feed less."|||It's not. Dogs eat less, have less health problems, and therefore money is saved.

Some of the higher-quality foods, such as Canidae and Chicken Soup, are comparable in price-per-pound to the cruddy brands.

ADD:

Linda W, table scraps provide a much better diet than the majority of foods on the market. Most of the dog foods on the market today are utter crap.|||i just don't think it makes that much of a difference whether you feed them Purina or a more expensive dog food. one of my dogs eats Purina puppy chow and the other will not eat anything but kibbles and bits home style. i have spoken to many vets who say it is fine so i believe them, they don't have food related health problems, they actually don't have any health problems and one is 11! that said i don't think they should be unhappy with their food and that's why i don't feed them ol'roy.|||Because, I was raised in the day, our dogs, only got table scraps, and a few kibbles(dry food, a handful to u youngsters) Those dogs, lived to be, 18 19 20 yrs old. With pure bred comes inbred comes short life. Now a dog lives to be10-14, their considered old. I can't begin to tell you how many of our dogs, were taken, to be "put-down'. They would try to bite 1 of us, as much, aS THEY WOULD TRY TO BITE ANOTHER. eVEN THO THEY HAD NO TEETH. No Iams or Eukanuba, back then. No chinese wheat, either. No, dogs , dying of unknown ....................causes....... only thing I swear of, Heart Worm, Rabies, Distemp( still ?) last not leastunder 6 mos, Parvo. Shots, needed 4 healthy , friend, 4 life.........Sorry, got off track, have 3 dogs, none of which eat dog food, of any kind. I cook chix, rice vegs, or beef, or pork w/ vegs. My dogs, DO NOT eat dog food of any kind. I have a vet, who also only feeds people food. Gives a vitamin suppmnt, also. People aren;'t r smart as they think they are, at times. Times, common sense, goes a lot furthur.|||some people buy cheap dog food, some buy more expensive dog food... sometimes it's a few bucks more but sometimes it costs much more than that. i mean, just because you can't give your dog great food, doesnt mean u can't have one.

I'm sure that whatever they feed their dogs, it has some nutrition, so even if they say it's not good food....dog food usually is.- no matter the brand.|||I fed cheap food and had to add in all kinds of stuff to get my dogs to eat it and more often than not they'd pick out what I added and left the dog food for me to throw away.

Good quality food is more expensive but after finally finding one both my dogs will eat alone I find I'm spending far less.

A $0# bag of Canidae costs me 42.60 a month. Ifeed less than the cheap crap and don't add anything in and we're all happy cos the extra money means more toys and gas money to take them Bye-Bye when they're bored.
